Over the past decades, food production has become more efficient, but simultaneously the shift to big agriculture has led the industry to leave a larger environmental footprint.
In this article for The Conversation, Kevin McCann and senior McCann lab associate Marie Gutgesell, in collaboration with geographer Evan Fraser, discuss how large-scale agricultural practices are leading to the depletion of natural ecosystems with their own built-in checks and balances. For example, with regards to fish farming, practices like trawling have disturbed bottom sediment, a habitat for many species. Fraser, Gutgesell, and McCann discuss ways in which agricultural practices can be made more sustainable and take into consideration the diversity of natural ecosystems that ought to be preserved.
